Framework for geography

Author: Geographical Association & RGS-IBG

Can we - should we - 'brand' school geography?

Geography, as we all acknowledge, is a very broad subject. Partly because of this, it can begin to lose its special identity - Geography simply becomes what geographers do!

In the context of current curriculum changes planned for schools, is it possible to describe geography's special identity - and its special contribution to the curriculum? Is it possible to do this in slightly but significantly different ways at each key stage?

This article is a first stab at this - very much work in progress. Please do send in your comments on this paper.

Thinking Geographically was first published in Geography Vol 91 (3) in Autumn 2006. The whole journal is available to GA members on the GA website.
